The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race has reaffirmed its status as one of the premier events in global athletics, as World Athletics has officially renewed its Gold Label status. This accolade highlights the race’s significance not only in Nigeria but also across the entire African continent.

Launched in 2013, the Okpekpe race has evolved from a local initiative into an international attraction. It made history in 2015 as the first road race in West Africa to receive a World Athletics label, climbing from Bronze to Silver in 2018, and reaching Gold status in 2022.

Race Set to Shine on Global Stage in 2026

The 11th edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026, and will uniquely be the only Label road race held worldwide on that day. This significant scheduling guarantees that all eyes will be on Nigeria’s Edo State and the picturesque town of Okpekpe.

Runners will embark on a 10-kilometre journey, beginning at Apana Road and culminating in Okpekpe, navigating through tarred streets and the scenic hills of the region—a true test of stamina and determination.

Elite Competitors Set to Break Records

The event continues to draw world-class athletes, with Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo holding the men’s course record at a swift 28:28. Meanwhile, Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui, representing Kazakhstan, set the women’s record at 32:38, reflecting the exceptional level of competition the race attracts annually.

Moreover, beyond its athletic prowess, the Okpekpe race serves as a cultural and economic showcase for the Edo North Senatorial District. Each iteration of the event transforms the area into a bustling center for commerce and tourism, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local hospitality and allure of Edo State.

Organisers Celebrate Renewed Status

“The renewal of our Gold Label status is a testament to the standards we have set and maintained over the years. Okpekpe is not just a race; it is Africa’s pride and Nigeria’s gift to the world,” said Zack Amodu, the director of the organization. “On May 23rd, the hills of Edo will echo with the footsteps of champions, and history will once again be written,” he added.

Building Excitement for the Upcoming Race

With registration already open, excitement is mounting for what promises to be the most thrilling edition yet. The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race is Nigeria’s first event to have its course officially measured by a World Athletics-accredited measurer.

Since its inception, the race has consistently attracted elite athletes from around the globe while fostering tourism, investment, and cultural exchange in Edo State.
