Sipho Mbule during the Betway Premiership match between Orlando Pirates and Siwelele FC
Despite missing out during the recent international window, Sipho Mbule may not be out of the Bafana Bafana picture just yet, with a potential route back into the squad still firmly within reach ahead of the next FIFA World Cup.
The talented midfielder was among the notable absentees when head coach Hugo Broos named his squad for the recent friendlies against the Panama national football team, raising questions given Mbule’s earlier contributions during the qualification campaign.

Broos, however, was quick to explain his decision.
The Belgian tactician acknowledged Mbule’s role in helping South Africa move closer to World Cup qualification but stressed that past performances alone would not secure a place in his squad.
Instead, the coach emphasised the importance of consistent game time and maintaining high performance levels at club level – an area where Mbule has faced challenges in recent weeks.
Since the beginning of the year, the midfielder has struggled to cement a regular starting berth, with limited opportunities affecting his momentum.
That lack of rhythm ultimately counted against him during the latest selection cycle.
However, the situation appears to be evolving behind the scenes.
According to sources close to the Buccaneers camp, Mbule has shown renewed determination in training, working tirelessly to impress head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and his technical team.
The 28-year-old is believed to be fighting hard to force his way back into the starting XI as the season approaches its closing stages.
There have already been small but significant signs of progress.
Prior to the international break, Mbule began to reintroduce himself into the matchday fold, making second-half substitute appearances in Betway Premiership fixtures against Siwelele FC and TS Galaxy.
While limited, those minutes offered a glimpse of his intent to rebuild match sharpness and re-establish his influence on the pitch.
With the Buccaneers set to take on Golden Arrows at the Orlando Amstel Arena this evening, the stakes are high – not only for the club’s title ambitions but also for players like Mbule who are looking to make a late push.

Pirates remain locked in a tight race with defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, and every performance from here on could prove decisive.
Regular minutes, strong performances, and visible impact could yet reopen the door to the national team for a player like Mbule, with Broos having made his selection criteria clear for football’s biggest stage.
