In a heartfelt farewell to the sport he loves, Aaron Ramsey has confirmed his retirement from football, officially ending a remarkable two-decade career. The 35-year-old Welshman announced his decision on social media, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences that defined his journey.
With over 250 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and 86 caps for the Wales national team, where he netted 21 goals, Ramsey has left an indelible mark on the game. His departure follows a period of inactivity after his contract with UNAM in Mexico was mutually terminated last October. Prior to that, he had returned to his boyhood club Cardiff City for a brief stint, which also included serving as interim manager.
On his personal Instagram account, he expressed, “This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.” His statement revealed deep gratitude towards the teams and supporters who shaped his career.
Ramsey praised his time with Wales, saying, “It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.” He also expressed appreciation for the unwavering support of the Welsh fans: “You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows, and you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can’t thank you enough. Diolch.”
He went on to acknowledge the clubs he played for, stating, “Thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for. Thank you to all the managers and staff that have helped me be able to live my dream and play at the highest level. And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible.”
Ramsey made his professional debut for Cardiff City in April 2007 at the tender age of 16, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history. Just over a year later, he was signed by Arsenal for just under £5 million. Though his initial years were marred by injuries, he quickly established himself, being named Welsh Young Player of the Year in both 2009 and 2010.
During his time at Arsenal, Ramsey made 369 appearances and scored 64 goals, playing a crucial role in the team’s success, including three FA Cup victories. His remarkable journey also took him to Juventus in 2019, where he earned a Serie A title and a Coppa Italia under manager Maurizio Sarri. His spell at Rangers was also notable, where he contributed to the club’s Scottish Cup triumph and a run to the Europa League final, even though he missed a pivotal penalty in the shootout against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Most recently, Ramsey was part of Wales’ historic first World Cup campaign since 1958, playing in all three matches in Qatar 2022.
As he steps away from professional football, Ramsey leaves behind a legacy filled with remarkable achievements, unforgettable memories, and heartfelt connections forged with fans and teammates alike.
