Concerns are mounting for Nigeria’s Gift Monday as the striker struggles to find the back of the net, even after her recent recall to the Super Falcons.
The 24-year-old forward made a promising start in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with Washington Spirit, boasting a decent scoring record. However, her form appears to have dramatically dipped in recent matches.
A source from the Nigerian team expressed worry over her current performance, stating, “Yes, she’s back to the Super Falcons, but the problem is that she’s no longer scoring goals, which is what is expected of a striker.”
Monday was given the opportunity to impress during a recent friendly against Cameroon in Yaoundé, but she failed to register any goals and was effectively contained by the opposition.
Over the weekend, she returned to the pitch for the opening match of the new NWSL season, playing for 64 minutes against Portland Thorns. Unfortunately for Monday and her team, Washington suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat. This is a stark contrast to last season, when the Spirit triumphed 2-0 over the Thorns, with Monday contributing to the scoresheet.
With upcoming fixtures on the horizon, both club and national team fans will be hoping the forward can find her scoring touch once again.
