In a surprising turn of events, VfL Wolfsburg has appointed Dieter Hecking as their new head coach, marking his return to the club nearly a decade after his previous exit.

Official Announcement
The 61-year-old Hecking takes over from Daniel Bauer and will be tasked with leading the team through the critical final stages of the Bundesliga season.
Boosting Stability
VfL sports director Pirmin Schwegler expressed confidence in Hecking’s capabilities, stating, “Dieter Hecking brings exactly the experience we need in the current situation. He knows the club, the environment, and also the requirements of the Bundesliga very well. We are convinced that he will give the team the necessary stability with his calmness, his expertise, and his clear line to achieve our common goal, to maintain our league status.”
A Track Record of Success
During his previous tenure with Wolfsburg from 2013 to 2016, Hecking orchestrated one of the club’s most successful eras, guiding them to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga in the 2014/2015 season, a DFB Cup triumph over Borussia Dortmund, and a Supercup victory against Bayern Munich. Over 165 competitive matches, he earned an impressive average of 1.75 points per game, making him the second-most-capped coach in the club’s history.
Hecking’s Vision
Expressing his sentiments on returning, Hecking stated, “Returning to VfL Wolfsburg means a great deal to me. I’ve experienced an intense and successful period here and know the quality and energy that this club possesses. Now it’s important to fully focus on the upcoming tasks and pool all our forces together to stay in the Bundesliga.”
Recent Coaching Roles
Following his successful spell with the Wolves, Hecking also managed Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburger SV, later transitioning to a sports director role at 1. FC Nürnberg. His most recent coaching position was with VfL Bochum from November 2024 to September 2025.
