Sporting icon Alexandra Ndolo is facing an uphill battle for recognition and support in Kenya, a country where athletics typically dominates the spotlight.

Despite her remarkable achievements in the world of fencing, Ndolo claims she has been left to fend for herself by the very system meant to assist her. In a candid social media statement, she accused government and sporting officials of years of neglect, even as she has worked tirelessly to elevate Kenya’s profile in this underappreciated discipline.

Initially, officials instructed her to “prove herself to the system” before they would consider providing financial support. She followed their directives, successfully qualifying for the African Championships and clinching a gold medal, only to find that the promised assistance never materialised.

Obstacles to Support

Instead of receiving the funding she expected, Ndolo was told that her season was “too expensive,” although she could apply for financing by submitting detailed budgets. She complied repeatedly, providing comprehensive financial documents but claims that her requests consistently went unanswered.

Adding to her frustration, Ndolo’s face was featured on promotional materials for Team Kenya ahead of the 2024 Olympics, while privately, she faced repeated denials regarding support for her international competitions.

Questioning the lack of funds to support her endeavors, she was met with vague reassurances: “We are trying our best and are so sorry for your situation. If we could, we would help you.”

Facing Intimidation

More alarmingly, Ndolo alleges that her requests for assistance were met with intimidation, including threats of being banned from competing for Kenya and sporadic withholding of her competition registrations. “I keep asking questions and consequently have been threatened with a ban from competing for Kenya and my competition registrations have been at times withheld,” she said.

Ndolo also mentioned that younger athletes have been misled to believe that funding exclusively goes to her, which has fostered resentment towards her, all while she has been largely self-funding her international competitions.

Broader Implications

Ndolo’s struggles highlight pressing questions about how athletes in niche sports are treated in Kenya. Her experience is emblematic of a larger issue in which athletes are sidelined when they excel in disciplines that may not conform to mainstream sporting expectations.

As Kenya continues to bask in the glory of its athletics champions, the question remains: Will the country’s sports governing bodies extend their support to those representing Kenya in less conventional sports? Alexandra Ndolo has already showcased her capabilities; now, the spotlight shifts to whether Kenya’s sports leadership will step up to support her.
