Bayern Munich’s head coach Vincent Kompany has expressed tremendous pride in his team’s tenacity after they salvaged a point in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen, despite frustrations over key officiating decisions.

The match at BayArena saw a contentious atmosphere, highlighted by the sending off of Nicolas Jackson with a straight red card for a reckless challenge before half-time, followed later by Luis Diaz receiving a second yellow card for simulation in the 84th minute.

Diaz’s earlier equalizer, which followed Aleix Garcia’s opening goal, proved vital in securing a draw for Bayern, though the defending Bundesliga champions now see their lead at the summit reduced to nine points.

Kompany commended his team’s resolve throughout the match, remarking, “I’m incredibly proud of the team’s mentality. Many things happened. There were phases where you could have different opinions, and which influenced the game.”

He further criticized the officiating, particularly regarding the decisions that affected his side: “We got a red card [Jackson] out of nowhere. No discussion about that. However, there’s discussion about Lucho’s [Diaz] red card. I can’t understand it.”

Despite the challenges faced, Bayern extended their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga to seven matches and maintained a remarkable 38-game scoring run in the league – the longest since their impressive 43-match streak between September 2022 and January 2024. They have also shown incredible resilience this season by recovering 19 points from losing positions, more than any other club.

Kompany also voiced his disappointment over two disallowed goals from his team, with Jonathan Tah’s strike controversially ruled out for handball, and Harry Kane’s effort disallowed following a VAR review. “Regarding [Jonathan] Tah’s goal, what should he do? The ball bounced off his arm into his foot. There was no movement. If you played football, you know what I’m talking about,” he argued.

He added, “As for Harry’s goal, I can’t understand it either. For me, it was a clear goal. I don’t know what he should do.”

Captain Joshua Kimmich echoed Kompany’s sentiments regarding Diaz’s sending off, stating, “For me, you can’t give a yellow card for diving there. There was contact with [Janis] Blaswich’s foot, and he [Diaz] got up immediately. I’m not saying it should be a penalty, but at least not a yellow card.”
