Former Spanish assistant coach Roberto Moreno has opened up about his fractured relationship with PSG manager Luis Enrique.
A tumultuous chapter in the careers of Roberto Moreno and Luis Enrique has come to light, revealing a deep rift between the former colleagues. Moreno, who served as Enrique’s assistant with the Spanish national team, now describes their relationship as “non-existent.”
The division stemmed from Enrique’s departure from the national setup due to personal issues, which led to Moreno stepping in as interim coach. Reflecting on that difficult period, Moreno stated, “It was impossible to talk to him.”
Moreno further elaborated on the communications breakdown, sharing, “I spoke indirectly with his psychologist because it was impossible to talk to him. I said it was something I was only going to do if he gave the go-ahead. And he gave it.”
After the tragic death of Enrique’s daughter, Moreno attempted to reassure his former mentor about his commitment to the national team. However, this gesture did little to mend their strained relationship. He recounted, “I went to his house after the unfortunate death of his daughter and I told him that what I had said publicly I was going to fulfill. He told me he wasn’t counting on me anymore that I would never train with him again.”
Despite hopes for reconciliation, once Luis Enrique returned, Moreno was no longer part of the coaching staff. Moreno expressed his frustration at how the narrative surrounding their split was portrayed in the media, stating, “They tried to present me as an ogre, as someone who wanted to stay at all costs.”
He added, “Very ugly things were published about how I hadn’t gone to see him at that time, when what we really did was respect everything he told us. On a personal level it was very hard.”
The fallout underscores the complexities of professional relationships as Moreno navigates the aftermath of a partnership that once showed promise.
