The iconic Safari Rally is not just a thrilling motorsport event but a significant catalyst for economic growth in Kenya, particularly in Naivasha and Nakuru County. As the 2026 World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally unfolds, local officials are optimistic about the financial advantages the event brings, with an anticipated attendance of around 600,000 fans over its three-day run from March 12 to March 15.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano highlighted the considerable economic impact of the rally during a press conference at the event’s service park, emphasizing its benefits for local hospitality establishments. “The event is already delivering strong economic gains, particularly within the hospitality sector across Naivasha and the wider Nakuru County,” Miano stated.
She detailed that hotels and hospitality services in the area are witnessing near-full occupancy due to the influx of rally-goers. “The Ministry of Tourism is part of this event because we recognize the contribution it makes towards our targets of increasing tourism numbers, earnings and employment opportunities,” she added. “Since the resumption of the rally in Kenya, we have witnessed the establishment of new hotel facilities and increased investor interest as Naivasha continues to emerge as an important tourism destination.”
The Cabinet Secretary confirmed the government’s direct investment in this year’s rally through various sponsorship initiatives aimed at enhancing Kenya’s profile on the world stage. This year, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), has sponsored a participating rally car, highlighting the potential of sports tourism in promoting Kenya’s attractions.
“This is significant for us because we appreciate the platform that sports tourism offers in showcasing the beauty of Kenya to the world while positioning the country as a premier destination for conferences and tourism,” Miano stated. The government aims to leverage this globally recognized motorsport event to elevate the “Destination Kenya” brand to a wider audience.
Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya noted that the rally is attracting strong regional interest and is poised to break attendance records this year. “The excitement is big across East Africa and beyond. We expect about 10,000 visitors from the region, and overall we anticipate surpassing last year’s attendance. Last year we had about 400,000 spectators, and this year we expect around 600,000 fans,” Mvurya stated.
Additionally, the government is working in collaboration with the private sector to establish a motorsport talent development academy aimed at nurturing young Kenyan drivers and technicians. “We are already working on a motorsport talent academy in collaboration with the private sector. Soon we will be making an announcement so that we can begin grooming and inspiring young talents in motorsport,” he said.
This initiative is seen as crucial for developing a skilled workforce in rally driving, vehicle engineering, and motorsport management, ensuring that Kenya can build long-term capacity within the sport.
