
In a stunning twist in South African schoolboy rugby, Stellenberg High School ended a nearly three-decade wait by defeating Paarl Gimnasium for the first time in 28 years on Saturday.
The match unfolded as a nail-biter, culminating in jubilant celebrations from Stellenberg’s players and their fans as the final whistle blew.
Paarl Gim opened the scoring in the clash, with Hendre van Zyl crossing the line for a converted try, giving the home team an early 7-0 advantage. However, Stellenberg quickly found their footing as flyhalf Ethan van Biljon slotted a penalty to reduce the deficit to 7-3 by the 24th minute.
As the first half progressed, Gim added another try just before the break, extending their lead to 12-3.
Second Half Drama
Stellenberg came out strong after half-time, scoring a converted try to close the gap to 12-10. Despite facing a numerical disadvantage from a yellow card, the visitors took the lead for the first time with another converted try, making it 17-12.
Van Biljon then further secured Stellenberg’s position with another penalty, putting them ahead 20-12 with just six minutes remaining.
Gim responded fiercely, scoring again to tighten the competition at 20-19, leaving the final moments hanging in the balance. With Gim on the offensive in a desperate attempt to reclaim the lead, Stellenberg’s resolute defence held strong, ensuring their historic victory.
