Takamoto Katsuta’s historic victory at the Safari Rally Kenya has rewritten the narrative for Japanese drivers in the World Rally Championship.

This weekend, Katsuta, alongside co-driver Aaron Johnston, celebrated a monumental achievement, claiming his first victory in the esteemed competition. The win marks Katsuta’s maiden triumph within the World Rally Championship, a significant milestone after competing in 94 events.

The race took a dramatic turn on Saturday as three frontrunners faced unexpected retirements. Championship leader Elfyn Evans was the first to withdraw, suffering terminal damage to his rear-right suspension. His misfortune was swiftly followed by clutch failure for Oliver Solberg and an electrical issue for reigning world champion Sébastien Ogier, reshaping the rally’s outcome.

With his competitors out of the running, Katsuta seized the opportunity, finishing the rally with visible emotion. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude towards his co-driver and team. “I don’t know what to say,” said a teary-eyed Katsuta. “We have had so many difficulties and moments. Aaron has worked very hard with me. The team always believed in me, even when I was failing many times. I’m here because of them and Aaron.”

This victory also makes Katsuta the first Japanese driver to triumph in a major African WRC rally since Kenjiro Shinozuka’s 1992 win at the Rallye Côte d’Ivoire, further highlighting the significance of his achievement. Notably, the Safari Rally was the stage for Katsuta’s first WRC podium finish back in 2021.

Finishing in a commendable second place was French competitor Adrien Fourmaux, who secured the 10th WRC podium of his career with Hyundai Motorsport. Despite battling severe overheating issues throughout the event, Fourmaux and his team exhibited resilience to maintain their position.

The event culminated with Kenyan President William Ruto presenting awards to the top teams and drivers. He took the opportunity to reaffirm the government’s commitment to enhancing the rally experience in Kenya.
