The anticipation builds as Somalia prepares to compete against Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, and reigning champions Tanzania in the Boys’ category of the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers. The draw, which took place on Monday at the FUFA TV studio in Mengo, Uganda, was conducted by CECAFA Head of Marketing and Communication, Andrew Oryada.
Set to take place from December 6-9 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, and the FUFA Stadium Kadiba, the Zonal qualifiers in Uganda promise to deliver an exciting and competitive atmosphere. “This time we shall have more teams than we have had before with 10 for the Boys and eight for the girls,” Oryada stated, hinting at an increase in the tournament’s stakes.
The hosts, Uganda, have been drawn into Group A alongside Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, and South Sudan. In the Girls’ category, the defending champions Uganda will face off against Kenya, Burundi, and Rwanda in Group A, while Group B features Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Djibouti.
The tournament’s structure allows the top two teams from each group to advance to the semi-finals, with the winners competing for the championship title. The runners-up will vie for third place in a playoff match. Notably, champions will receive a cash prize of $100,000, the second-place team $75,000, and the third $50,000, all aimed at supporting development projects in the winning schools.
