In a significant setback for Turkish athletics, World Athletics has rejected Nigerian sprinting sensation Favour Ofili’s request to change her national allegiance to Türkiye. This decision comes in light of a comprehensive review of applications from the Türkiye Athletics Federation, as the country seeks to bolster its squad ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The international governing body found that Ofili’s intended transfer was part of a broader strategy employed by Türkiye to attract foreign athletes through lucrative contracts. This approach was deemed to threaten the integrity of national competitions, hinder the development of local talent, and put homegrown athletes at risk.
In the wake of this ruling, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially welcomed Ofili back into its ranks. AFN President Tonobok Okowa expressed enthusiasm about her return, highlighting the necessity for unity and support around one of Nigeria’s premier track athletes.
Okowa stated, “What she needs most from stakeholders is love, support, encouragement and more love,” underscoring the importance of creating an optimal environment for Ofili to flourish in her sprinting career.
With the 23-year-old’s reintegration into the Nigerian team, the AFN is optimistic that she will significantly enhance Nigeria’s prospects in sprinting events. Officials and fans alike are rallying behind her, hoping that the renewed support from the athletics community will enable her to reach her full potential on the world stage.
