This month marks a significant chapter in the histories of Aston Villa and Crystal Palace as they both vie for European glory, prompting huge logistical challenges for their supporters.

For many fans, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness their teams compete in the Europa League and Europa Conference League finals. Aston Villa aims to break a three-decade trophy drought against Freiburg in Istanbul, while Crystal Palace makes history as they seek their first major continental honour facing Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig.

The journey to these finals will not only be undertaken by die-hard supporters but also by long-time fans eager to witness their clubs achieve something monumental.

However, challenges arise as ticketing limitations and steep prices for transportation and accommodation threaten to overshadow what should be a time of celebration.

Below, we explore the major hurdles fans face as they prepare for these thrilling matches.

TICKET ALLOCATION

Disappointingly for fans, UEFA reserves a significant number of tickets for sponsors, dignitaries, and VIPs, limiting accessibility for true supporters.

Aston Villa has secured 10,758 tickets for the Beşiktaş Stadium, which hosts 42,684 attendees, while UEFA reports that 37,500 tickets are available to fans and the general public, with 22,000 distributed between both teams. Successful ticket purchasers can select up to two tickets.

With tens of thousands of supporters likely to converge on Istanbul, the competition for tickets is fierce. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis through the UEFA Ticket Portal and are subject to certain eligibility requirements. Fortunately, those who secure tickets through official channels can expect reasonable prices, with the cheapest option at £35 and the most expensive at £207. However, resale sites are quoting substantially higher prices, with category one tickets listed for as much as £1,101.

Similar difficulties await Crystal Palace supporters, who are allocated 11,372 tickets for their match at the Red Bull Arena, which seats 45,228. With 17,000 season ticket holders, demand far exceeds supply, compounding the challenges. Resale prices for Palace tickets have soared, with the cheapest now at £332 and the highest at £500.

FLIGHTS

Airlines have capitalised on the influx of fans, significantly increasing flight prices for the finals. A round trip for Villa fans flying from Birmingham International to Istanbul between May 19 and 21 can reach around £800 with Pegasus Airlines, nearly double the cost compared to the same flights a week later. Fans looking to economise may consider less desirable flight schedules, with long stopovers around £400, though this option is typically unpopular.

Crystal Palace fans face even steeper prices, with direct return flights from Gatwick to Leipzig exceeding £1,000. Although supporters might save about £200 by opting for flights with multiple changes—a potentially cumbersome choice given the additional eight hours of travel time—many are prioritising comfort.

While the journey from London to Leipzig is shorter than Birmingham to Istanbul, the pricing issue remains stark. Some fans may opt for the 634-mile drive, which takes about 12 hours at a lower cost, with bus options also available at approximately £60, albeit with a journey duration of 23 hours, according to travel comparison site Omio.

HOTELS

Having secured a ticket and booking a pricey flight, the next step for fans is finding suitable accommodation. Fortunately for Aston Villa supporters, Istanbul—the largest city in Europe with a population of 15 million—offers a wide array of lodging options, preventing a significant spike in prices.

Depending on preferences, there are numerous choices available for under £50 per night, from luxury hotels to simpler lodgings for those simply seeking somewhere to rest after a long night of celebrations.

In contrast, Crystal Palace supporters face more challenges finding affordable accommodations in Leipzig, where prices have risen significantly for the May 26-28 dates. A central budget option, Travel24 Hotel, is priced at £530, while accommodations farther from the city range from £100 to £300 but require transportation to reach.

No doubt, some dedicated fans will embrace the spirit of celebration, opting to immerse themselves in the festivities all night or even resorting to finding a comfortable bench in Leipzig after the matches.
