As Manchester City gears up for the FA Cup final against Chelsea, manager Pep Guardiola has voiced his apprehension regarding the impact of a demanding fixture schedule on his players’ performance. City’s pursuit of a potential double comes at a crucial moment, but fatigue could pose a significant challenge.
City, currently trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by two points with only two matches left, will set their league ambitions aside as they travel to Wembley. The defending champions are seeking to secure a place in the history books by winning the FA Cup for a record fourth consecutive time.
Guardiola’s squad faced a tough match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, which they won 3-0, but the quick turnaround means they will have little time to rest before meeting Chelsea. Notably, they will then resume their league campaign against Bournemouth just three days after the Cup final.
Despite making six changes in the lineup for the match against Palace, Guardiola remains cognizant of the potential physical exhaustion faced by his players. “After the FA Cup, it is Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” he stated during a press conference. “We have to travel to London. They will be at home with their wife and kids. So that is fatigue and fatigue and fatigue.”
In an effort to mitigate fatigue, Guardiola opted to rest key players such as Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, and Jeremy Doku during the Crystal Palace match. He expressed confidence in his entire squad, emphasizing, “I have full confidence in all the squad, including the ones that didn’t play against Palace. They are so good. I thought we needed more energy. Savinho, Antoine (Semenyo), and Omar (Marmoush) were really good. Now we rest and focus on the final.”
Having lost the previous two FA Cup finals to Crystal Palace in 2025 and Manchester United two years ago, City will be eager to break this streak. A victory would not only provide Guardiola with his third FA Cup title but also mark the 20th trophy of his illustrious tenure at the club since his arrival a decade ago.
