Real Betis delivered an emphatic performance, securing a 4-0 victory over Panathinaikos in the UEFA Europa League, thus marking their first success in six European encounters at home. The result granted Betis a 4-1 aggregate win, effectively extinguishing Panathinaikos’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in two decades.

After narrowly edging a 1-0 win in the first leg, Panathinaikos entered the second leg in a favorable position to advance.

However, the dynamics of the match shifted dramatically just seven minutes into the game, when a long-range effort from Cucho Hernandez struck the crossbar and fell to Aitor Ruibal. He showcased composure, controlling the ball before striking it home to equalize the aggregate score.

Panathinaikos struggled to find their footing, and Betis nearly added to their tally three minutes later, only denied by a crucial tackle from Sverrir Ingi Ingason that prevented Pablo Fornals from converting at the near post.

For the visitors, Andrews Tetteh exhibited some promise but squandered a clear chance just after the half-hour mark, shooting directly at Pau Lopez. This miss proved costly, as Sofyan Amrabat gave Betis the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Under the impression he was offside during a series of plays involving Ricardo Rodriguez, Amrabat inadvertently gave up possession, but soon capitalized on a mishap from Renato Sanches to unleash a stunning curling shot into the top corner of Alban Lafont’s net.

With Betis scoring more than once for only the second time in six matches, there were high expectations for them to assert their dominance after the break.

Within eight minutes of the resumption, Cucho Hernandez struck again, timing his run perfectly to meet Marc Bartra’s lofted pass and slot it past an exposed Lafont.

In response, Panathinaikos made a tactical double substitution, but it had little effect as Betis continued to assert their control over the match.

Betis showcased their superiority further, with Cucho assisting Ezzalzouli, who released a burst of speed down the left. Instead of shooting from a tight angle, Ezzalzouli selflessly squared the ball to Antony, who finished clinically to extend the lead to four goals.

Marc Roca nearly added a fifth, but a swift save from Lafont kept Betis at four as they shifted focus towards their upcoming quarter-final clash with Braga.

Set for matches on April 9th and 16th, the Verdiblancos look forward to capitalizing on their momentum from this victory, which notably ended Panathinaikos’s nine-match unbeaten streak.
