In a remarkable turnaround, Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef is advocating for Khanyisa Mayo, suggesting the young striker could be pivotal in their campaign following his recent goal-scoring efforts. Mayo marked his return to form by scoring the second goal of his season during the Chiefs’ resounding 4-1 victory over Magesi FC on Wednesday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Having faced a season marred by injuries, Mayo entered the match as a substitute and made an immediate impact, converting a cross from Reeve Frosler with a powerful header in the 83rd minute. This crucial goal not only underscored his talent but also capped off a triumphant away performance, extending Chiefs’ solid winning streak to five league matches.
Ben Youssef expressed his appreciation for Mayo’s perseverance and hard work in training: “True, he’s been working hard a lot, he’s been unlucky with one or two injuries, then he’s back, he’s been performing very well in the training sessions, he’s been fighting,” he told iDiski Times regarding Mayo’s joyous celebration.
The co-coach acknowledged that Mayo had been occasionally overlooked in recent games, which led to some frustration, yet he remains optimistic about the striker’s potential contributions moving forward. “He’s been a little bit unlucky in the last few games that he didn’t score—but I think today is his second goal and he will help the team a lot,” he added.
As the season heads towards its climax and with Chiefs aiming for a top-three finish, the coaching staff is eager for Mayo’s goal against Magesi to mark a resurgence in his performance. Ben Youssef will be counting on his striker’s renewed confidence to drive the team forward in their quest for silverware.
