Itumeleng Khune, the acclaimed former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, has provided keen insights into the contrasting playing styles of Orlando Pirates stars Sipho Mbule and Relebohile Mofokeng.
Khune, who donned the national team jersey 93 times from 2008 to 2016, has significant experience, having represented South Africa at the Olympics, AFCON tournaments, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

During a recent friendly match between Bafana Bafana and Ghana’s B team at Dobsonville Stadium, Khune highlighted the differences between Mofokeng’s role as an attacking midfielder and Mbule’s approach. He elaborated on their distinct qualities within the same position.
“Rele is more a player that can pick a pass,” Khune noted. “There’s a situation where Rele wanted to chip the ball to the far post instead of trying to take a shot. The difference is Mbule can take a shot; Rele can’t. Rele wants to collect. As a number 10, he always wants to combine, get a touch and then pass the net,” he explained on SABC2.
Hlompho Kekana, a fellow former international with 27 caps to his name, also commented on Mofokeng’s development. He observed, “I like how he is mobile on the ball. Like I said when we saw this kid before, he used to be that kid that likes to do darling, darling on the ball. Now he controls his body shape, moves to half spaces, and occupies areas that will hurt any number six.”
