Football scouts journey to Ghana’s northern region to uncover new talent

A prestigious delegation including officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has paid a visit to the Tolon Constituency in Northern Ghana in a bid to unearth the next generation of football talent.

Led by the chairman of the National Juvenile Committee of the GFA, JoeSalam Abubakar, the team comprised U-20 Manager Maxwell Konadu and U-16 Assistant Coach Awudu Issaka. Their mission was to scout the local area for potential stars for Ghana’s national teams.

The scouts attended the semi-finals of the Soyalana Community Gala, an influential grassroots football tournament. This event has gained prominence as a crucial avenue for identifying emerging talent in Northern Ghana.

The visiting delegation was joined by Emmanuel Aidoo, the head coach of the Eleven Wonders FC, a Premier League side in Ghana. They engaged with local football stakeholders, analysing player performance, and interacting with the promising talent.

The visit was facilitated by Habib Iddriss, the local Member of Parliament for the Tolon Constituency. Iddriss, a well-known football enthusiast and philanthropist, has often backed initiatives that support youth development through sport. His patronage has elevated the Soyalana Community Gala into a prime event on the local football calendar.

This year’s tournament invited 16 different communities, fostering a sense of unity, rivalry, and offering an opportunity for young players to prove their footballing abilities. The semi-final matches provided an array of enthralling football, allowing the scouting team to more closely assess the region’s up-and-coming footballers.

In addition to the observation, the technical team engaged directly with young players. They provided advice on maintaining discipline, pursuing a football career, and the expectations of professional football. The goal was to inspire young footballers, mentally prepping them for the opportunities that could arise from platforms like the Community Gala.

The scouting initiative is part of the GFA’s broader strategy of extending the reach of talent identification to underserved parts of the country. With renowned figures such as Maxwell Konadu and Awudu Issaka in the mix, the drive highlights a reinvigorated commitment towards nurturing grassroots football and recognising future ambassadors of Ghana’s national teams.
