As the Bundesliga season approaches its climax, Bayern Munich’s manager Vincent Kompany has sent a clear message to struggling opponents Wolfsburg: his team’s focus remains unwavering, despite having already secured the title.

Bayern Munich clinched their second consecutive Bundesliga title with four games to spare, following a thrilling 4-2 victory against Stuttgart last month. Since that triumph, they have played two high-scoring encounters, securing a 4-3 win over Mainz and drawing 3-3 with Heidenheim. They have also progressed to the DFB-Pokal final, although their Champions League journey was cut short by a narrow 6-5 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

With the DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart scheduled for May 23, Kompany’s focus will be tested against Wolfsburg, who are battling to escape the relegation zone. Currently sitting in 16th place and only above St. Pauli on goal difference, Wolfsburg is striving to avoid automatic relegation and remain in contention for survival through the relegation play-offs.

Kompany emphasised the importance of maintaining intensity, stating: “Of course, we can’t underestimate what it’s like in the Wolfsburg dressing room when the players and coach watch this press conference; that’s exactly what they want, for us to fly along relaxed.” He added, “When you fight for survival, for the employees, that’s an extra energy. That’s what they’ll have in this game.”

𝗞𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄’𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲: “Looking ahead a week, I can tell you that my focus for the match against Köln will be on maintaining our momentum heading into the cup final. If we make substitutions, they’ll be purely precautionary. If the players are fit…” [Twitter]

As Bayern prepares for their final games, they will also be bidding farewell to key midfielder Leon Goretzka, who is set to leave the club as a free agent with links to AC Milan. Kompany acknowledged the emotional significance for Goretzka, stating, “He can still be very important for us in the end. Now, of course, it will be a bit emotional for him. But we still have the cup final, and I think his priority is only that we win so that we can get an extra title.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Wolfsburg – Christian Eriksen

Eriksen recently registered his eighth assist of the Bundesliga season, a significant achievement considering only one Wolfsburg player has recorded more assists in a single season over the last decade. The Dane last provided more assists in a league season while at Tottenham in the 2018-19 campaign.

Bayern Munich – Michael Olise

With 33 goal involvements this season (14 goals, 19 assists), Olise has equalled the record for a winger since detailed data collection began in the Bundesliga in 2004-05. Together with Harry Kane’s 38 goal involvements, this marks the first time since 2004-05 that two players from the same club have achieved at least 33 goal involvements in one season.

Bayern Munich Celebration

MATCH PREDICTION – BAYERN MUNICH WIN

Bayern Munich boasts a remarkable points-per-game average of 2.54 against Wolfsburg, having previously won 8-1 in the reverse fixture, marking Wolfsburg’s heaviest loss ever in the Bundesliga. With a total of 83 points so far, Bayern is experiencing one of their most successful seasons to date.

On the flip side, Wolfsburg is grappling with their worst-ever Bundesliga season, collecting only 26 points from 32 matches. However, they are currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak for the first time since late last year, which has lifted them out of the automatic relegation zone for the first time since Matchday 23.
