The Scottish football scene is set for an exciting addition as Hearts of Midlothian confirms a pre-contract agreement with rising star Rogers Mato, a Ugandan forward making waves across Europe.

Hearts have made a strategic move ahead of the upcoming season by signing Ugandan international Rogers Mato, who will officially join the Scottish Premiership side this July after his contract with North Macedonian outfit Vardar comes to an end.

The 22-year-old striker has put pen to paper on a three-year contract, marking a significant acquisition for the Tynecastle club, particularly given Mato’s standout performances in European competitions.

Mato’s exceptional abilities on the pitch have made him one of the most sought-after African forwards, particularly following a remarkable season where he demonstrated his knack for finding the back of the net. His form has also earned him a place in Uganda’s national squad for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Rogers Mato: A Rising Talent

The forward began his professional journey at Proline FC in Uganda, where he captured attention in the local Premier League before moving to Turkish club Sanliurfaspor, marking his entry into European football.

Mato’s career progressed rapidly with a transfer to AP Brera in North Macedonia in February 2024, laying the groundwork for his subsequent move to Vardar the following year.

At Vardar, the young talent quickly carved out his role as a pivotal player, contributing to the team’s qualification for the UEFA Conference League as well as securing the Macedonian Cup in his inaugural season.

However, it is Mato’s current season that has catapulted him into the spotlight, with an impressive tally of 12 goals in just 13 league appearances, significantly impacting Vardar’s pursuit of league supremacy.

On the international front, Mato has maintained a strong presence, earning 41 caps and scoring eight goals for the Uganda Cranes since his debut in 2022, highlighted by a crucial goal against Nigeria during the recent AFCON tournament.

This summer marks the beginning of a new chapter for Mato as he joins manager Derek McInnes at Hearts. The club will be counting on his speed, strength, and goal-scoring prowess to drive their ambitions for the upcoming season.
