In a striking display of skill and determination, Patrik Schick’s hat-trick propelled Bayer Leverkusen closer to securing a coveted Champions League spot following a convincing win over RB Leipzig on Saturday.

With this victory, Leverkusen cemented its hold on fourth place in the Bundesliga, leaving Leipzig trailing in third at the BayArena. Schick’s exceptional performance marked his fifth Bundesliga hat-trick, a feat not achieved since he netted four goals against Freiburg in December 2024. Alongside Schick on the scoresheet was Nathan Tella, contributing to a dominant Leverkusen display.

In an impressive run, the Czech international has now scored nine goals in his last six league matches, making him the highest scorer in Europe’s top five leagues since March 20. “He looks very fresh and alert,” praised Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand, in comments posted on the club’s official website. “His current form is impressive, and he’s also very important for the team as a leader on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

Leverkusen’s offensive display was overwhelming, generating 23 shots — with eight on target — resulting in an impressive expected goals (xG) total of 4.42, the second highest for the club this season. Their previous high this season was 4.52 against Wolfsburg in a thrilling 6-3 victory last month.

Reflecting on the match atmosphere, Hjulmand acknowledged the influence of the home fans: “I need to give a big compliment to our stadium and our vocal fans. That was fantastic energy, and we needed it today,” he said. “It was one of the best performances of the season. We had passion, but were also well-structured, with direct passing and strong counter-pressing.”

With two matches remaining in the season, Leverkusen finds itself tied on points with Stuttgart and Hoffenheim, both of whom faced off in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Leverkusen’s goal difference provides a slight edge over Stuttgart, setting the stage for an important showdown at MHPArena next week.
