As Team Nigeria gears up to showcase its athletic prowess, the nation is poised for a significant display of talent at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, commencing today in Accra, Ghana.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has publicly expressed its robust support for the Nigerian athletes, who will be represented by a contingent of 41 competitors over the six-day event. The NSC’s Director General, Bukola Olopade, urged the athletes to embody the values of confidence, discipline, and patriotism as they take to the field as representatives of their country.
“Team Nigeria has continued to demonstrate tremendous growth and consistency on the continental and global stage, and we are confident that our athletes will make the country proud once again in Ghana,” Olopade stated. He emphasized that this championship serves as yet another platform for the nation to illustrate its wealth of talent. “We are particularly encouraged by the blend of experienced international stars and emerging young athletes in the team.”
The Nigerian team is composed of 17 male and 24 female athletes, who will compete in a total of 26 track and field events as the country strives to maintain its upward trajectory in African athletics. Leading the efforts is world record-holder and star of the sprint hurdles, Tobi Amusan, who is already in Accra alongside several other elite home-based and foreign-based athletes in anticipation of the competition.
The event promises to be a showcase of athletic talent, with Nigeria hoping to build on its impressive legacy in the sport.
