Orlando Pirates are on the brink of a monumental achievement, as the club’s head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou acknowledges the scent of a long-awaited league title.
The Pirates took a significant step towards securing their first league championship in 14 years with a decisive victory against relegation-threatened Magesi FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Currently, the Sea Robbers trail league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by a mere three points, but they have a game in hand. With a superior goal difference, the Buccaneers could clinch the title if they triumph in their next two matches against Durban City and ORBIT College.
Mamelodi Sundowns are set to play their final league match on Tuesday against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium, adding to the intensity of the title race.
In a candid interview with SuperSport TV following their recent success, Coach Ouaddou expressed optimism about their title prospects, while emphasizing the need for focus in the final stretch of the season.
“We are very proud of them; I think it’s a process of the club. This project of Orlando Pirates is well-managed by fantastic people who know football, so I am not surprised by the title of the DDC,” Ouaddou stated.
He continued, “We pray to God to maybe follow their path. We still have two games; definitely we want to make our fans happy. 14 or 15 years without a title, I think we start to smell it. We are close but cannot touch the trophy yet. We will see what happens.”
Ouaddou also took a moment to acknowledge the passionate support from fans, which he credited as a vital element in the team’s efforts. “Credit has to be given to the fantastic fans as well; they really helped us, and we are going to fight for them until the end.”
