The long-awaited title for Orlando Pirates appears tantalisingly close, with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou expressing confidence after their recent victory.
Following a crucial win against relegation-threatened Magesi FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, the Pirates are just three points off the top of the table. They currently trail league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns but have a game in hand, which could be pivotal in their pursuit of the trophy.
With a superior goal difference over Sundowns, the Buccaneers could secure the championship by winning their final two matches against Durban City and ORBIT College. Sundowns will play their last league fixture on Tuesday against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium, leaving the title race hanging in the balance.
In an interview with SuperSport TV following their victory at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Ouaddou acknowledged the possibility of ending a 14-year trophy drought while urging his team to maintain focus on the upcoming matches. “We are very proud of them,” he stated. “This project of Orlando Pirates is well-managed by fantastic people who know football so I am not surprised by the title of the DDC. We pray to God to maybe follow their path.”
He added, “We still have two games and definitely we want to make our fans happy – 14 or 15 years without a title, I think we start to smell it; we are close but we cannot touch the trophy. Credit has to be given to the fantastic fans as well; they really helped us and we are going to fight for them until the end.”
