In a dramatic clash at Parliament, the future of Uganda’s participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations became a topic of heated debate between the State Minister for Sports and the President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
The row erupted during a parliamentary committee meeting on Wednesday, as Minister Peter Ogwang confronted FUFA president Moses Magogo over the federation’s proposed budget for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Magogo, who also represents Budiope East in Parliament, attempted to present the budget estimates to the committee when Ogwang swiftly intervened. The minister accused FUFA of failing to adhere to established guidelines by neglecting to consult with the National Council of Sports (NCS).
“I am shocked as a minister because I know FUFA works under the National Council of Sports,” Ogwang remarked during the contentious discussion in the Education and Sports Committee.
Magogo, however, vehemently defended FUFA’s actions, insisting the proper protocols had been followed. Despite attempts at mediation by committee chairperson James Kubeketelya, both sides remained resolute in their positions.
Magogo Attempts to Clarify FUFA’s Position on AFCON Budget
Frustrated by the confrontation, Magogo asserted that all required documents had indeed been submitted. “As far as I am concerned, there is a copy delivered at the National Council of Sports,” he stated, adding, “Whatever is being presented here has zero input from the federation.”
This assertion was promptly challenged by Dr. Bernard Ogwel, General Secretary of the NCS, who attended the meeting. He stated, “We have not received any submission from FUFA. And for all the years NCS has existed, the procedure for budget preparation is communicated at the appropriate time.”
The exchange highlights the increasing friction between the Ministry of Sports and FUFA as Uganda gears up to co-host the prestigious AFCON tournament in conjunction with Kenya and Tanzania in 2027.
