In a dramatic turn of events at the African Athletics Championships, Favour Ashe has not only conquered personal setbacks but has also secured his spot in the men’s 100 meters semifinals. After a successful appeal against an initial disqualification for a false start, Ashe ran a solo race and clocked a time of 10.55 seconds, earning him 24th overall and a place in Wednesday’s semifinals.
The Nigerian sprinter’s appeal was lodged by the Nigerian team and ultimately proved successful, allowing him to showcase his speed on the track despite the earlier setback.
In addition to Ashe’s performance, Team Nigeria had a strong showing on Day One of the championships, securing two medals in the women’s discus event. Divine Oladipo, representing Nigeria for the first time on an international stage, achieved a commendable Silver medal after finishing second in her event.
Oladipo’s teammate, Obiageri Amaechi, also made her mark, taking home the Bronze medal to complete Nigeria’s podium presence in the women’s discus.
As the championships continue, expectations are high for Team Nigeria to build on this momentum in the forthcoming events.
