Bailey's Promise To Cape Town Residents Over PSL Cup Finals

Re-elected SAFA Cape Town President Bennett Bailey has made a promise to PSL supporters in the Mother City who have not had a cup final in the region for a number of years.

Cape Town have not hosted a major PSL cup final since the 2018 Nedbank Cup final between Free State Stars and Durban City (previously Maritzburg United), where Ea Lla Koto were crowned champions with a narrow 1-0 win.

Even before then, the Mother City had generally been overlooked for domestic soccer cup finals, with the region also not seeing a lot of Bafana Bafana matches, until recently when Panama visited the city in the second international friendly against Hugo Broos’ charges.

After Bailey was re-elected for a third term as SAFA President in Cape Town on Sunday, among one of the objectives for his next term, is for the city to bid to host PSL cup finals.

“We’ve been doing a lot of major events, we’ve had South Sudan, we hosted Panama, but we’ve never hosted a major PSL final this side,” Bailey stressed, in an interview with Soccer Laduma.

“That is one of the (objectives) we need to do. What encourages us further is that we don’t have a Cape Town team in the PSL (Betway Premiership), so what we’re saying is let’s not lose what we can have.

“So if we can host those finals here, then people and business people can see, ‘but this is where we want to go to’, you see. That’s the purpose of it. Because we do have the capacity to host it, the City of Cape Town has been hosting major events with SAFA, so there is a relationship and we want to take it further,” Bailey said.

Bailey also revealed to the Siya crew that the resolution to bid to host PSL cup finals had not been made before tender went out for this season’s Nedbank Cup final, which will be played at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

“We have not bid, remember the decision was made on Sunday. We’re putting our name in the hat (for upcoming cup finals),” Bailey added.
