Inter Milan’s managerial landscape has witnessed a significant transformation as Cristian Chivu asserts his authority amid a title charge, dismissing claims that he has fundamentally changed during his inaugural season in charge.

Currently, Inter Milan sits nine points clear at the top of Serie A, with Chivu leading a campaign that has dramatically shifted both media scrutiny and fan expectations surrounding the team. At a pre-match press conference before Friday’s home clash with Cagliari, Chivu was queried on whether it is he who has evolved or if external perceptions have merely changed.

“I can be many things, but I’m definitely not a fool,” Chivu responded, emphasizing his ability to adapt: “Life has taught me to adapt to moments and narratives, to the role I occupy and the leadership I have. If at the beginning what I wanted to convey to the group made me say certain things in a certain way, along the way those things changed. Because everything changed, and I adjusted.”

Chivu’s appointment at Inter was met with skepticism, given his lack of experience in top-flight management following the departure of Simone Inzaghi, who had led the team to a league title and two Champions League finals. Although Chivu had some experience managing Parma, a rocky start with two defeats in the first three matches did little to quell doubts about his capabilities.

“We started out supposedly aiming just to finish eighth, that I was inexperienced and would be sacked after five matches, with people already thinking about who should replace me,” Chivu noted. “Instead, we kept going, thanks to a group of men who from the start aimed to be competitive.”

The narrative shift since Valentine’s Day

Chivu pointed out that the team’s media portrayal shifted dramatically after their victory over Juventus on Valentine’s Day, a match that drew criticism due to Alessandro Bastoni’s involvement, where he was accused of diving to receive a red card for an opponent.

“It has become a media pillory from every point of view, for Inter and for a player. That’s where the narrative changes,” Chivu expressed. He maintained that he has avoided controversy regarding officiating: “But I’ve never been confrontational and I’ve never worn masks. I’ve tried not to talk about referees and I haven’t done so. If we’re at this point in the season and someone doesn’t like what I say, that’s not my problem.”
