A turbulent start marred Nigeria’s medal ambitions at the African Athletics Championships in Ghana, as Favour Ashe faced disqualification in the men’s 100m due to a false start.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Ashe had crossed the finish line in heat 2 but was subsequently disqualified after failing to respond to umpires’ calls.
The incident unfolded as Ashe, alongside a competitor from Cameroon, returned to the starting blocks unaware of the umpires’ instructions, leading to their disqualification.
This championship marks the first senior African Championships for both Miracle Ezechukwu and Tejiri Ugoh. Ezechukwu displayed her potential by comfortably securing her place in the semifinals with a heat win, while Ugoh finished third in his heat, which was ultimately claimed by Heverge Etame from Cameroon.
In another highlight, Rosemary Chukwuma demonstrated her prowess by winning her heat in the women’s 100m, gliding to the finish line with a time of 11.44 seconds, showcasing a commanding performance.
