Kei Nishikori, a prominent figure in Japanese tennis, has announced his intention to retire from professional tennis following the conclusion of the 2026 season. The decision comes after a series of injuries that have hampered his performance in recent years, convincing him to bring an end to his illustrious career.
Once ranked as high as No. 4 in the world and a finalist at the 2014 US Open, Nishikori has expressed his initial desire to continue competing but ultimately realized that injuries have taken a significant toll on his body. “To be honest, I still wish I could continue my playing career,” he shared on social media. “Even so, looking back on everything up to this point, I can proudly say that I gave it my all. I am truly happy to have walked this path.”
As he prepares for the final chapter of his professional journey, Nishikori stated he would cherish every remaining match and is determined to fight until the very end. “Reaching the ATP Tour, playing at the highest level of competition and maintaining a presence in the top 10 is something I am extremely proud of,” he added. “Whether in victory or defeat, the special atmosphere I felt in packed arenas is irreplaceable.”
Despite the victories, Nishikori candidly acknowledged the emotional challenges posed by his injuries. “There were also times when I was overwhelmed by frustration and anxiety due to repeated injuries that prevented me from playing as I wanted,” he confessed. However, his unwavering love for tennis and the belief in his potential spurred him back to the court time and again.
Looking back, Nishikori reflected on how these experiences have enriched his life, expressing deep gratitude. “I feel that all of these experiences have enriched and shaped my life. I am deeply grateful to my family and to everyone who has supported me at all times,” he concluded.
